Overview

Non-Water Sanitation is aiming at providing sustainable sanitation solutions to people in South Africa via our partner organizations. The recent Cape Town drought gave a new urgency to the discussion about sustainable and water saving sanitation solutions.

URINE DIVERTING DRY TOILETS (UDDT'S) PROVIDE A SOLID AND SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE TO FLUSH TOILETS IN TIMES OF WATER CRISIS. THEY CAN PREVENT DISEASE OUTBREAKS IN URBAN SETTINGS DUE TO POOR SANITATION CONDITIONS AND COULD BE THE SINGLE MOST EFFECTIVE MEASURE IN CONSERVING WATER.

Please find below exemplary projects we are aiming at implementing in the country.

Innovative sanitation for a total of 445 Johannesburg families

In cooperation with the NGO BYIO, the sanitation of 58 families in the Mofolo North Squatter Camp, in the district of Soweto in Johannesburg and by 383 families in the Skoon Plaas Squatter Camp, in the east of Johannesburg, is to be improved sustainably and dignifiedly.

The families live in makeshift huts made of wood, cardboard and tin sheets. Whole families live in a single room no bigger than a garden shed. There is no running water, gas or electricity in the settlements. People cook on an open fire and only candles are available for the lighting. Above all, there is no sewage system or sewage treatment plants.

The sanitary conditions are inhumane and hazardous to health. Non-Water Sanitation wants to change that. In the video, King Binyam Selamun not only demonstrates the workings of a solar toilet from one of our manufacturing partners, he also clearly demonstrates his enthusiasm and confidence in the robust technology and reliable operation.

A project proposal for Cape Town and other drought-ridden urban areas

AN URBAN WATERLESS SANITATION SOLUTION FOR CAPE TOWN IN TIMES OF DROUGHT AND WATER
SCARCITY

We propose the deployment of Urine Diverting Dry Toilets (UDDTs) for the households in Cape Town.
These affordable and mobile toilets don’t require flush water, are odor-free and would prevent the risk of sanitation related disease spreading due to water shortages . Also, they are ecological, safe and low in maintenance, easy to use, adaptable to the local context and could be installed in apartment buildings.
This dry toilet management system is an alternative to pit latrines and flush toilets especially when water resources are scarce. Moreover, if required, the urine and feces collected through these dry toilets over time can be composted and could be used as manure for agricultural purposes which in turn can help solve agriculture related grievances and bring economic benefits.
